Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at Cannes: Mere hype or justified?

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan went to Cannes Film Festival for the first time in 2002 for her film Devdas. After that she became a regular there, never missing it, no matter what. Even when she had a broken leg, in spite of getting flanks from critics for her dressing sense she went there.
The lady’s life changed, previously she went there all by herself, and after marriage her husband Abhishek Bachchan escorted her. When she became the jury member of the festival it was hyped like no one other Indian has been part of an International Film fest before. But when another actress Nandita Das became the adjudicator in the fest, there was only a mere mention.

Nandita Das who walked the red carpet and donned the traditional Indian attire looked million bucks. Like wise this year too while Ash was busy sporting Guccis and Armanis, Deepika Padukone wore traditional sari and looked ravishing. Once Ash commented that it is the Brands or the prganizers who take her there decides on her wardrobe not her. Interesting!!! Since few years back, as I remember the Indian dress designers who got the chance to design her dresses, primarily they were Western outfits, like gowns and dresses were splashed all over the news papers.
Now Ash has changed into a bigger brand with huge earning potential, so for Western outfits she goes for the likes of Guccis and the Armanis. Her dining with people like Martin Scorsese is being talked about. But brushing with likes of such at Cannes is really not much. Since Cannes is not like Berlin Film Festival or Venice Film Festival. At Cannes producers can buy stalls and slots for their films. More importantly, Ash goes there as a Brand Ambassador of L’Oreal hence every time shares the space with Eva Longoria and other Brand Ambassadors of the same beauty brand.
Haven’t the media given too much of space about Ash’s presence at the Cannes? Or even for that matter her roles at the English films. Time to re-evaluate… She is just doing a job to get paid.
