Actress Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan is apparently doing her bit of research on the reclusive Bengali cinema diva Suchitra Sen as she is touted to step into her shoes soon. Ash, who has already worked with National Award-winning director Rituparno Ghosh twice (Chokher Bali and Raincoat), will be seen playing a bandit queen in the adapted film version of Devi Chaudhurani.

Devi Chaudhurani is a novel by Bengali writer Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1884 and is regarded as one of the most popular novels of its times. The film’s adaptation is also regarded as one of Sen’s most appreciated works.

“Aishwarya has asked for the DVDs of Suchitra Sen’s film which is about how a typical affluent housewife turns into the leader of a pack of dacoits. The film will be an adaptation of the novel which is set during the 1880s but nevertheless, Ash wanted to do some research on the actor,” says a source.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to re-launch her hit official website after almost four years; says she will talk to her fans and also reply to all mails

Her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan is a dedicated blogger, husband Abhishek Bachchan is comfortable on a micro-blogging site, but Aishwarya Rai Bachchan chooses to interact with her fans through her official website. She is in the process of reviving her website that has been defunct for the last four years.

More and more actors are now realising the importance of being connected to their fans.

Most B-Town actors now have a presence on one or more social networking sites and the number of ‘friends’ or ‘followers’ they have seems to have become a measure of how popular they are. Ash has stayed away from networking sites. The Bachchan bahu says, “My former ( Hollywood) manager had created a website (aishwaryaworldforever) for me way back, much before these sites became popular. It had many great tools, and my favourite was one where you could just chat. It was great. I thoroughly enjoyed that… But the year I got married, I actually shut it.”

Exclusivity has always been the buzzword in tinsel town. And the same holds true for Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan. The story goes like this, Ash’s ex-international celebrity manager Simone Sheffield, wanted to represent actor Mallika Sherawat, along with Rai-Bachchan, in the international movie world. “But

I couldn’t do it because there was a conflict,” says Simone. “Ash preferred me not to represent anyone else from India as long as I was working with her.” Ash’s India-based spokesperson, though, calls the news “totally untrue.”
Often touted as India’s best import to Hollywood, Ash is no longer associated with Simone. After nearly ten years, she has officially terminated her relationship with Aishwarya as her international representative. “I really don’t want to get into what happened between us. But it was the right time to part ways. Aishwarya and I have worked long enough making it a wonderful association. I am happy that I introduced her to the international market and wish her well in life,” says the LA-based celebrity manager.

I haven’t spoken with Rituda recently, the last was during the National Awards,” says Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. She however confirms that the she’s discussed a screen adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s famous Bengali novel, Devi Chaudhurani, with the director with whom she had earlier collaborated on Chokher Bali, adapted from Rabindranath Tagore’s Binodini, and Raincoat, inspired by a short story by O Henry.

Devi Chaudhurani was first published in 1884 and later translated into English by Subodh Chunder Mitter. It chronicled the revolutionary charge by a woman at a time when most were still behind purdah (veil). Threatened by Devi Chaudhurani’s patriotic fervour that brought more women out on the streets, the British banned the book. The ban was lifted only post-Independence.

Rituparno had reportedly approached Aishwarya for the Hindi-Bengali bilingual when they were filming Chokher Bali and got a nod from her when she was in Kolkata last year to accept a Best Actress award for Raavan.
